One Goal Decided the Fate of Alberto Aquilani

Football is such a game that can turn one player from zero to the hero or vice versa. The same thing happened with Alberto Aquilani, the former Italian skipper. The central midfielder was playing for the English Premier League giant Liverpool where he signed for 17.1 million Euros and the then coach of Liverpool Rafa Benitez took him from AS Roma of Italy. He was given the place of Xavi Alanso who went to Real Madrid that summer. But a goal changed his career and the fans erased his name completely from their memory.

Alberto Aquilani was not fully fit for the initial days in Liverpool and was suffering from an injury. He was a regular player in the first XI and helped his team to secure a place in the semi-finals of the Europa League. The opponent was Atletico Madrid where Diago Forlan, the Uruguay maestro was playing during that season. Liverpool was playing very well as Alberto Aquilani and Yossi Benayoun scored for them. They managed to have an aggregate lead on Atletico Madrid as Liverpool had to face a one-goal defeat in their away match.

The Premier League Clubs Demand Season Cancellation

Recently, it appeared as if the season for Premier League has been recovered in one or other forms. But the reality is that it is still hanging in the balance. Football is not going to return on the revised date of the postponement done officially which is on 30th April. That is the only certainty, but one question that remains is whether the 2019-20 campaign will at all be completed. An emergency meeting was being held some days back between senior football figures from all the 20 Premier League clubs. The decision that was almost unilateral in this meeting was that the present set of fixtures must be completed, whenever it is possible.

One reason was sporting integrity but the teams also feared about having to pay back approximately £750 million each for television rights. According to some reports, the balance is currently shifting and a large number of clubs want the season to be declared as null and cancel it for moral reasons. This means that Liverpool will not get its title. Some other implications are also there, but quotes by the chairmen are included in the report saying that none should take superiority during the pandemic.

The North Londoners finally pulled the plug on Poch, a coach who brought great stability but nothing much else. They are now going for the one whose best virtue is the opposite: chaos.

Ever since Mourinho arrived with the “I am the Special One” intro to England, it is hard to shake of that feeling of the Portuguese being at any new club to shake things up.
